Burn Your Socks

Due to the COVID-19 problems, we are postponing our “Burn Your Socks on the Equinox” event to a future date when we are give the all clear.

We are having the “3rd Annual Burning of the Socks on the Equinox” at Smith Mountain Marine Service & Sales in Crystal Shores Marina Resort on Friday, March 20, 2020 at 5:30pm (rain/snow date March 21 at 5:30pm). For more info, please call Kim at 540.297.7692.

The “Burning of the Socks” is an activity to signify the end of winter and the coming of the boating season.  Boaters can celebrate the first day of Spring with a ceremonial bonfire for burning your old socks, signifying it will soon be warm enough to wear boat shoes without socks!

The tradition is said to have started in the mid-1970s when a boatyard worker in Annapolis was tired of wearing his socks during the winter, so on the first day of spring, right after work, he burned his socks to celebrate the beginning of Spring, boat shoes, and that boating season is just around the corner.

Everyone is invited, just bring an old pair of cotton/wool socks and join the informal fun!

Smith Mountain Marine Service & Sales is located at 1737 Crystal Shores Drive in Crystal Shores Marina in Moneta, Virginia, right on beautiful Smith Mountain Lake.  SMMS&S is located on the Bedford County side of the lake.
